Winamp, the popular media player for Windows, will become open source towards the end of this year. The developers of Winamp announced that the Windows application will be available to developers worldwide on September 24.
Justin Frankel and Dmitry Boldyrev started developing Winamp under the umbrella of Nullsoft twenty years ago. The application was famous for its lightweight design, extensive customization and a number of plug-ins to extend the functionality of the player.
However, Nullsoft was acquired by AOL in 1999 and by Radionomy in 2014. In fact, at that time, there were rumors that Microsoft was in talks with AOL to purchase Winamp and Shoutcast.
In a blog post, Winamp invited developers from around the world to contribute their own ideas to the application. The media player allows users to directly contribute to improving the product, and interested developers can register directly on the web page.
It should be noted that this announcement does not apply to Winamp’s applications on other platforms such as Android and iOS.
