xAI is open-sourcing the Grok chatbot, according to Elon Musk will present. Musk, who made his artificial intelligence assistant available to Premium+ subscribers on X, did not provide details about the decision, which is planned to come into force this week.
Elon Musk had previously made Tesla patents open source 10 years ago and thus shared the know-how of his company. In fact, almost every major automaker has adopted electric vehicle charging connectivity in this way.
Musk may be hoping that by allowing third-party developers and researchers to review Grok’s code, the model can gain greater adoption. The developer community can also provide feedback that can be used to improve Grok.
On the other hand, Grok’s open sourcing can also be seen as an attack on OpenAI. Earlier this month, Musk filed a lawsuit against the developer of ChatGPT, which he co-founded, alleging that it prioritized making profits while abandoning its original non-profit mission.
