Apple is planning a major artificial intelligence revision for the iOS 18 mobile operating system, but some new features are not expected to be compatible with older iPhone models. It is said that the company’s first artificial intelligence roadmap for iOS 18 consists of two parts. These will be basic AI features that will be processed on the device, and more advanced capabilities that will require communication with Apple’s servers.

Which iPhone Models Will Not Support iOS 18 Artificial Intelligence Features?

At the center of these features is the redesigned Siri. To this end, Apple engineers had to redesign the core software of “Siri” using large language models (LLMs), the algorithm that forms the basis of productive artificial intelligence.

Apple’s own LLM is expected to handle basic AI tasks, and this will be entirely on-device. In other words, the model is powered by the iPhone’s processor rather than the cloud. It’s unclear what the criteria for a basic task would be, but the LLM is said to include code that determines whether a request can be processed on-device or requires Apple’s servers.

from Bloomberg Mark GurmanAccording to , the AI capabilities on the device will largely require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer to work. Meanwhile, rumors suggest that iOS 18 will be compatible with the same iPhone models as iOS 17.

Considering all the claims, iPhone models that will not support some iOS 18 artificial intelligence features will be listed as follows:

Both iPadOS 18 and macOS 15 are expected to share many of the same AI features, and Gurman expects Macs and iPads to have at least one M1 for on-device AI features. He said he would need rope. In this sense, Macs with Apple processors will be a requirement for on-device artificial intelligence in macOS 15. Those older than the 5th generation iPad Pro will not support on-device artificial intelligence features in iPadOS 18.
