JEDEC Will Introduce Features of the LPDDR6 Standard in the Third Quarter
Samsung LPDDR5X

JEDEC plans to officially introduce the specifications of the LPDDR6 standard in the third quarter of this year. aims. Although the LPDDR5 standard has a 5-year history, companies such as Samsung (LPDDR5) or SK Hynix (LPDDR5T) have produced different versions of this standard in terms of performance and power efficiency. But the basic LPDDR features have not changed since then.

LPDDR6 will become an important onboard AI memory for smartphones and other mobile devices, along with expected obvious changes such as higher bandwidth support. In this way, it will be able to directly support AI calculations on mobile devices. As AI becomes increasingly important in computing, the lack of dedicated memory for AI models becomes an issue.

  • LPDDR5: 6,400 MT/s
  • LPDDR5X: 8,533 MT/s
  • LPDDR6: 12,800 MT/s
  • LPDDR6X: 17,066 MT/s

Samsung has been the only company to talk about this memory standard so far, mentioning the LPDDR6 standard, which targets 17 MT/s bandwidth with its LPDDR6X variant. Although we do not yet know the official specifications, it is said that the first LPDDR6 products may be released next year with the strong support of JEDEC members and key partners in the mobile industry. One of the first products to use this memory standard may be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Samsung and SK Hynix are expected to be the first companies to commercialize LPDDR6 memory.
