AMD Started Development of RDNA4 Based Navi 48 GPU
AMD RDNA4 Navi 48

AMD has confirmed its first GPU for the RDNA4 series, called Navi 48. Although the code name of the new generation external GPU is NV48, it should not be confused with NVIDIA’s 20-year-old NV48 GPU. AMD software engineers have made progress on RDNA4 GPUs and shared them in the ROCm Validation Suite, a platform for testing and validating GPUs.

Engineers created a file containing the build target and initial configuration files to form the basis of the NV48 GPU. offered patches. However, these updates do not provide any information about the technical specifications of the GPU. AMD has yet to announce when and how they will introduce the RDNA4 architecture, but there are rumors that they may scale back their plans by not releasing high-end GPUs in the next generation. It is possible that the new Radeon 8000 series will be based on only two GPUs.

The Navi 48 is said to have 32 WGP and cannot compete directly with NVIDIA’s high-end GPUs like the GB202, its top model in the next generation. AMD is instead targeting the upper mid-range and mid-range market with two RDNA4 GPUs. One of these GPUs is Navi 48, but there is no information yet about the other GPU called Navi 44. Navi 44 is expected to have around 20 WGPs.

Before we forget, AMD RDNA4 GPUs will be the first GPUs on the market to support the company’s PCIe Gen5 interface and possibly the new memory technology known as GDDR7.
