Apple has rolled out a major guidelines update that paves the way for emulators on the App Store platform. As such, Henrik Rydgård, the creator of the popular Android emulator PPSSPP, said that the PPSSPP emulator may be released on the App Store later this year. explained. On the other hand, Apple still needs to ease an important restriction.

According to updated App Store guidelines, Apple will only allow game emulators to feature on the App Store if they offer built-in games or offer them as in-app downloads. Rydgård explained in a blog post that he would bring the PSP emulator if Apple loosened restrictions and allowed users to choose game files.

Rydgård said: “If it turns out that the rules now allow emulators with an ISO/ROM selector, PPSSPP will be coming to the App Store later this year. Otherwise, he won’t come!”.

Since Apple requires emulators to offer games built-in or as in-app downloads, most emulators may not be available on the App Store. This is because emulator developers do not own the rights to the games. Therefore, instead of offering built-in games, emulators offer the option of loading game files, that is, using the file chooser.

In short, if Apple does not relax the restriction on the use of file collectors, it will still not be possible for emulators to come to the App Store. Additionally, aside from file picker access, it’s unclear whether Apple will allow emulators to use JIT compilation. Rydgård also stated from the beginning that his emulator will not need JIT to increase performance on iPhone devices. Let’s see if the emulators’ App Store adventure can begin.
