New Apple TV Built-in Camera

With the addition of the FaceTime feature for tvOS 17, rumors that Apple may add a built-in camera to future Apple TV boxes have once again flared up. The company introduced the tvOS 17 update last year, and the addition of FaceTime to Apple TV was the most talked about topic. With this addition, users could take advantage of Continuity Camera to make video calls wirelessly from their iPhone or iPad device to their TV.

BloombergApple is discussing automating home functions and offering a revamped Apple TV set-top box with a built-in camera for FaceTime video conferencing and gesture-based controls, Apple’s Mark Gurman says in his Power On newsletter. Other information includes that the technology will work seamlessly with both iPhone and Vision Pro.

Gurman hasn’t gone beyond making claims that future Apple TV boxes may include a camera and support gesture-based controls. On the other hand, this is in line with Apple’s addition of hand gestures in iOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and tvOS 17. This feature could allow users to make hand gestures to trigger 3D effects during video calls in the FaceTime app or other video calling apps.
