Unreal Engine 5.4 software, whose capabilities were demonstrated for the first time with the 1943: Rise of Hydra game at the State of Unreal GDC 2024 event held last month, is now available to developers.

Unreal Engine 5.4 Innovations

Unreal Engine 5.4 has advanced performance improvements that will interest players closely. Many games built on a game engine that is inadequate in terms of performance have difficulties on current generation consoles and require serious hardware to run well on PC. Unreal Engine 5.4 aims to make 60 FPS experiences more accessible on existing hardware. Epic also notes that they’ve made improvements to shader compilation, eliminating annoying stutters that have plagued some Unreal Engine games in recent years.

Epic’s statement is as follows: “With many developers targeting 60 Hz experiences, we have made significant efforts to improve rendering performance in UE 5.4. This involves refactoring systems to enable a higher degree of parallelization and adding GPU instance allocation to hardware ray tracing; this feature now also benefits from additional primitive types and an optimized Path Tracer. “Further optimizations have been made to shader compilation, resulting in a notable improvement in project bake times.”

There are also many new features designed to improve visual fidelity. Nanite features “Adaptive Tessellation” and . adds “Heterogeneous Volumes” that can produce very realistic and dynamic smoke and clouds. Epic’s in-engine Temporal Super Resolution upgrade has also been improved, giving developers more options to easily plug AI and machine learning tools into Unreal Engine 5.
