Bluesky started in 2019 as an internal project led by Dorsey under the Twitter umbrella (now known as X). It later became an independent company with Jay Graber taking command as chief executive officer. Over the years, the company has invested time and money into creating decentralized social media and subsequently an open protocol for its own social network. Until earlier this year, Bluesky only accepted invited users. As of May 2024, Bluesky has over 5.5 million users.
