Relic Entertainment 42 layoffs

A week ago, Sega announced that it had made some major layoffs and sold Relic Entertainment, one of its game studios. Now, Vancover-based Relic Entertainment has announced some layoffs, totaling 41 employees.

This development was first reported by Robyn Smale, Relic’s external development producer. In the LinkedIn post announced. The company later confirmed this in another LinkedIn message.

Part of Relic’s message reads: “Letting people go was not an easy decision and was made solely to give Relic the best possible chance of survival in an increasingly unstable industry. “It in no way reflects the expertise, passion or character of the employees affected.”

Affected employees will receive severance packages as well as extended benefits. In May 2023, Relic suffered an even larger layoff while under the Sega umbrella, affecting 122 team members.

One of Relic’s last two major projects was Age of Empires 4, the latest RTS game in Microsoft’s long-running series, releasing for PC in October 2021 and later for Xbox in 2022. The other notable game the studio recently released was Company of Heroes 3, a World War II RTS game created by Relic.
